Ryan Residence
Santa Fe, New Mexico

A multitude of exceptional views, severe slopes and a site underlined with solid rock made the Ryan residence an unusually challenging project. Located in the Canada Oncha subdivision of Santa Fe, the house looks west out over the Rio Grande valley and the Jemez Mountains beyond.

Due to the slopes on the site, the eastern edge of the building was pushed right up to the road edge, giving it a decidedly urban quality. The western facade is nestled in the pinon tops with a slope that races down and away. Those views have no foreground, only the distant horizon.

The kitchen comprises a sitting area with a fireplace and a dining nook as well as access to both the front courtyard and a west-facing portal. The dining nook overlooks a lush courtyard. There is a restricted view to the southeast over the courtyard wall, allowing eastern light to fill the space in the early morning hours.

Strategically placed skylights above northern walls in the kitchen and living room allow natural light into spaces that ordinarily would not receive midday light because of their orientation.

The master bedroom includes a bath, a walk-in closet and a library. With views to the south and east, the library is a cozy, light-filled room with generous shelving and a corner kiva fireplace.
